How do I start enrollment?

You will be prompted to enroll in multi-factor authentication (MFA) the first time you sign in to your school account, if you have not already enrolled in MFA. See this article for more information on MFA. To start the enrollment process, go to sign in to your school account in Office 365 or other school provided service like a website (e.g. Student Gateway, Canvas) or an application (e.g. Canvas mobile app). For example, you can navigate to Office 365 (Outlook) by clicking here to start the enrollment process.

1. Enter your full email address and click Next.
   
   
   
   
2. Enter your password and click Sign in.
   
   
   
   
3. You will be prompted that more information is needed to secure your account. Click Next.
   
   
   
   
4. You will now be able to enroll in one of two methods:
   
   Method 1: Phone (a. through text / b. through call)
   Method 2: Mobile App (through notification)
   
   Follow the appropriate instructions for your preferred method below. 

How do I enroll my phone for MFA?

Method 1a: Enroll your phone through a text

1. After you have completed steps 1-4 above, you will be prompted to enroll in MFA. The screen will ask you to set up a MFA method to keep your account secure. If you prefer to receive MFA notifications via text, select I want to set up a different method at the bottom of this screen.
   
   
   
   
2. A window will pop up asking you which method you would like to choose.
   
   
   
   
3. Select Phone from the dropdown box.
   
   
   
   
4. Click Confirm.
   
   
   
   
5. Type your phone number in the Enter phone number text box, then click Text me a code.  
   
   Note: If you have an international phone number, remember to change the country code before proceeding.
   
   
   
   
6. A code will be sent to your phone via text. Open the text message on your phone to see the code.
   
   
7. Enter the code from the text message into the Enter code text box and click Next.
   
   
   
   
8. You will receive a confirmation message that the SMS (text) has been verified and that your phone has now been enrolled as a method for MFA. Click Next.
   
   
   
   
9. You will be directed to a screen that indicates you have successfully enrolled your phone as a method for MFA. Click Done to complete the enrollment process.
   
   
   
   
10. You should now be signed in to your account. 

Method 1b: Enroll your phone through a call

1. After you have completed steps 1-4 above, you will be prompted to enroll in MFA. The screen will ask you to set up a MFA method to keep your account secure. If you prefer to receive MFA notifications via text, select I want to set up a different method at the bottom of this screen.
   
   
   
   
2. A window will pop up asking you which method you would like to choose.
   
   
   
   
3. Select Phone from the dropdown box.
   
   
   
   
4. Click Confirm.
   
   
   
   
5. Type your phone number in the Enter phone number text box, then click Call me.  
   
   Note: If you have an international phone number, remember to change the country code before proceeding.
   
   
   
   
6. An onscreen notification will appear that indicates the number you entered is being called.
   
   
   
   
7. Answer the call on your phone and you will hear the following message:
   
   Thank you for using Microsoft's sign-in verification system.
   Please press the pound key to finish your verification.
   If you did not initiate this verification, someone may be trying to access your account.
   Please press 0 pound to submit a fraud alert.
   This will notify your company's IT team and block further verification attempts.

    

8. Click the # sign to verify your number and you will hear the following message:
   
   Your sign-in was successfully verified. Goodbye.

    

9. You will receive a confirmation message that the call has been answered and that your phone has now been enrolled as a method for MFA. Click Next.
   
   
   
   
10. You will be directed to a screen that indicates you have successfully enrolled your phone as a method for MFA. Click Done to complete the enrollment process.
    
    
    
    
11. You should now be signed in to your account. 

How do I enroll a mobile app for MFA?

Method 2: Enroll a mobile app through a notification

1. After you have completed steps 1-4 above, you will be prompted to enroll in MFA. The screen will ask you to set up a MFA method to keep your account secure. If you prefer to use the Microsoft Authenticator mobile app for MFA, click Next.
   
   Note: With the mobile app, you will be able to approve a push notification on your phone or copy and enter a code from the app to verify your identity for MFA.
   
   
   
   
2. You will now be prompted to set up your account in the Microsoft Authenticator app. In order to do this, you will need to first download the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone. Use the App Store for Apple devices or the Play Store for Android devices.  For a walkthrough on how to download the authenticator app, click here.
   
   
   
   
3. Once the Microsoft Authenticator app is downloaded, open the app on your phone and click the + sign in the top-right corner to start adding your account. 
   
   
   
   
4. You will be asked what kind of account you are adding. Click Work or school account. 
   
   
   
   
5. A pop up will ask you to either sign in or scan a QR code. Click Scan a QR code.
   
   
   
   
6. You will now see a screen for scanning a QR code on your phone in the app.
   
   
   
   
7. Go back to the MFA enrollment screen in your web browser where it asked you to set up your account, and click Next.
   
   
   
   
8. You will now see a QR code on the screen. Scan this QR code within the scanner on your phone screen.
   
   
   
   
9. Once the QR code is scanned, you will see a confirmation on your phone that your account was added to the app. It will also show that you can now use notification approvals or one-time password codes through the app for MFA (they call this two-step verification in the app). Click Finish to finish adding your account to the app.
   
   
   
   
10. The app will now take you back to its home screen where it will show your school account with your school email address.
    
    
    
    
11. Go back to the MFA enrollment screen in your web browser where it asked you to scan the QR code, and click Next.
    
    
    
    
12. You will now see a screen telling you to approve a notification that is being sent to the app.
    
    
    
    
13. There are two ways to approve the notification on your phone:
    
    1) Open the app on your phone, if it's not open already. You will get a pop up on your phone asking if you approve sign-in. Click Approve.
    
    2) A push notification from the app will show up on your phone. Click the push notification. This will bring you to the app where you will see a pop up asking if you approve sign-in. Click Approve.
    
    Note: You may have to put in a passcode or complete another authentication method (e.g. FaceID) for your phone to finish approval. The method depends on what method you use to unlock your phone.
    
    
    
    
14. Go back to the MFA enrollment screen in your web browser where it asked you to approve the notification. It should now show a confirmation message that the notification was approved. Click Next.
    
    
    
    
15. You will be directed to a screen that indicates you have successfully enrolled the Microsoft Authenticator app as a method for MFA. Click Done to complete the enrollment process.
    
    
    
    
16. You should now be signed in to your account.
